Movimento de Libertação de São Tomé and Príncipe
(Leftist) Formed in 1960 and sole legal party from 1975-1991. Ruling party in the National Assembly from 1994-present.
 
Democratic Convergence Party-Reflection Group (PCD-GR)
Partido de Convergencia Democratica - Grupo de Reflexão
(Conservative) The "Reflection Group" was a think tank established on 10 December 1989. The group became a party and adopted its current name on 4 November 1990. It was the ruling party in the National Assembly from 1991-1994.

Commonly called CODO; Established in April 1990 in Lisbon, Portugal. The party was a merger of three overseas opposition movements (ADNSTP, FRNSTP, and UDISTP) formed during one party rule in STP.

An opposition party formed during one party rule in STP. Based in Gabon, it was led by Carlos da Graça.

Frente de Resistência Nacional de São Tomé and Príncipe-Renovada
Formed by a small faction of FRNSTP members who refused to give up armed struggle against the one party STP government. Based in Kribi, Cameroon, it was led by monso dos Santos. He would eventually help found the Christian Democratic Front (FDC).
